Service Dogs Save Lives
The National Guard Association of Michigan (NGAM) is proud to introduce the 54 by 24 Program, a critical initiative focused on saving lives through the sponsorship of service dogs across all 54 states and territories. This program is dedicated to helping end the epidemic of suicide among NGAM service members and veterans.
The Importance of Service Dogs:
Service dogs have been proven to provide essential emotional support, companionship, and assistance to those struggling with mental health issues, including PTSD and depression. By sponsoring service dogs, we aim to offer a lifeline to those in need, fostering resilience and hope.
The Challenge of Suicide Among Service Members:
A 2018 Department of Defense suicide report highlighted the unique and severe challenges our service members and veterans face. The suicide rate for active-duty members averages 24.8 deaths per 100,000 personnel, while the rate for National Guard members is even higher at 30.6 per 100,000 service members. These statistics underscore the urgent need for effective support systems and interventions.
